Generally speaking, all the best replica watch brands would be glad to claim a truly “iconic” chronograph in their lineup, but the replica TAG Heuer arguably has a couple, the famous square-cased Monaco is the most outstanding one among all. When (pre-TAG) Heuer launched Monaco back in 1969, it was the first Swiss-made automatic chronograph that was square and water-resistant. Now, they have revealed the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition which specifically recalls Steve McQueen’s role in making Monaco famous.
The Heuer Monaco found fame after Steve McQueen sported it on his wrist during his appearance in the 1971 film, Le Mans. McQueen’s character is sponsored by Gulf Oil in that same movie, and you’ll see that his white livery also sported the blue and orange stripes, as in the famous picture above. So the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition is inspired not only by the original Heuer Monaco but also by Steve McQueen and his character in Le Mans. TAG Heuer says it is also a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Gulf racing stripes and its role in motor racing.
At its essence, the fake TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition has remained true to the original. For instance, the crown is still on the left of the watch case, there is a perfectly domed sapphire crystal, and the dial is blue with a sunray-brushed finish. It is powered by the TAG Heuer Calibre 11 which is very similar to the movement found in original Monaco with the benefit of modern production methods and tolerances. The Calibre 11 provides 40 hours of power reserve and beats at 4Hz. It is a time-tested and reliable movement and, much like the Calibre 1861 is to the Speedmaster, it is indelibly linked to the Heuer Monaco.
The steel case is 39mm in diameter but being square in shape means it wears much larger than you might think. The bezel and case both have alternating brushed and polished finishing for the case with some visual interest. Different from original Monaco, the pushers in the Gulf Special are square, which I think fits the aesthetic of the watch much better. As mentioned earlier, the watch has a highly domed and beveled sapphire crystal. This was one of the hallmarks of original Monaco from 1969 and one of the features that helped it to be water-resistant. Speaking of water-resistance, the TAG Heuer replica Monaco Gulf Special Edition is rated to 100m, even with its display caseback.
While the movement and case are similar to many Monaco re-issues and special editions we’ve seen before, the dial is where this version stands out. The base of the dial is the original dark blue with a sunray brush as one would find on the fake Heuer Monaco. The gulf stripes are then applied to the right half of the dial. But the determination to have the stripes off-center makes sense given that’s how the Gulf stripes are applied on cars and livery, I suspect this may prove to be a love-hate design element with collectors who demand symmetry.
The primary hands and the hour markers are rhodium plated and filled with Super-LumiNova. The Chrono second’s hand has no luminous material but is lacquered red which suits it well. In the end, there is the date wheel at 6:00 and the Gulf logo right above it. The brand logo and usual complement of text are found in the usual spots as the other TAG Heuer replica Monaco watches. My least favorite element of the dial is perhaps the rhodium markers that are applied outside the chapter ring.
The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition is possible to appeal to an avid Monaco collector, a fan of motorsport racing or the Gulf team, or Steve McQueen fans sentimental for the ’70s. The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition is not limited by the number of watches produced but it is a US-only edition. From now until September 15, 2017, it is available online on our website.
Breitling may be best famous for aviation-focused timepieces, but when it pulls a dive watch like the new steel Superocean 44 Special out of its arsenal we sit up and take pay attention to it. The newest addition to the brand’s Superocean range which was first released in 1957, the 44 Special seems like a lethally capable piece of kit, and its specs don’t disappoint, with a depth rating of 1,000 meters or 3,300 feet.
The aeronautical Breitling collection has shifted its focus from the skies to the sea with the new Superocean 44. A ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel announces its tool replica watch cred and it also features a security valve for balancing out pressure differences, marking it as worthy of professional use. Add a ratcheted profile for ease of handling even with gloves and luminescent dial details to enhance underwater legibility and you can see why this might make the Planet Ocean boys at the fake Omega a little nervous.
The Superocean 44, sized at 44mm, of course, comes in two versions: black dial and bezel with a classic black or blue rubber replica Breitling “ocean racer” strap; and blue dial and bezel on stainless steel. Both feature a twin-gasket screw-locked crown and house a mechanical self-winding movement chronometer-certified by COSC. A seconds hand with a red tip and a small luminescent triangle allow the wearer to verify that the movement is operating at any given time. The steel case on both pieces is satin-finished on top and polished on the sides and crown. Baton-type hands distinguish hours from minutes while differently shaped hour-markers indicate five-minute intervals, quarters, and 12 o’clock. Finally, the sapphire crystal is “glareproofed” on both sides to enhance legibility in any condition.
The brand’s signature “ocean racer” strap is always one of our favorite strap designs and we recommend it as an option for any Breitling timepiece whose style fits the bill. It is a hybrid between a classic rubber dive strap and a racing-inspired “rally” strap with a row of holes, it’s rugged and unique. The fake Breitling’s other rubber strap is also pretty cool, featuring a raised Breitling signature and finished in blue, giving it a bit more of an aeronautical vibe. Only Panerai does it better, though a Luminor is generally a less accessible timepiece than the tag Heuer replica. However, the 44 Superocean is in line with Breathing’s return to larger timepieces and matches the size of most Luminous. Which would you want to be strapped to your wrist in the event of an underwater emergency?
